While public insurance adjusters can charge for their services in many different ways, the typical arrangement with Houston Insurance Claims and in Texas for Public Adjusters is to charge a percentage of the settlement amount. A Texas & Houston, TX Public Adjuster will normally charge 10% of the settlement amount.
These fees are charged on a contingency basis meaning that there is no direct fee paid by you for services. Payment comes from the percentage charged on the overall payout. What does this mean? Well, if your Public Adjuster and insurance claim are located in Texas or Houston, TX they will most likely charge 10% of the amount they are able to get the insurance company to settle at. If the insurance company settles on a $10,000.00 total estimate for repair or replacement of damaged items, then the Houston Public Adjuster fee will be $1,000.00 ($10%).
Some states only allow for billing by the hour instead of contingency billing like Texas. In those states the Public Adjuster will usually have an hourly rate contract and agreement and will bill based on time spent or hours worked on your claim. Louisiana is currently set up this way for Public Adjuster billing for example.
So, what is a contingency fee? This arrangement means that you will typically pay no money out of pocket unless your Public Adjuster is able to get your insurance company to issue payment for your claim as long as you continue to move your claim forward as needed. Canceling or withdrawing your claim after you have an agreement with a Public Adjuster can sometimes result in cancellation fees, so we always recommend checking the agreement you will be signing so that you understand your options as you move forward.
It is important to understand who you will be working with when it comes to your money, however. Public Adjusters are generally honest and capable, but there can be bad actors who are not honest or capable.
